No more free Danish classes. What now?

$

0

Here is some background.

Until August 2018 foreign nationals in Denmark were offered Danish classes free of charge in the public language centers. This only required a Danish personal registration number (CPR).

Today free Danish classes are no longer an option, no matter which of the many types of schools you choose to sign up for.

In August 2108 Danish law was changed and a fee of 2000 kr. per Module was introduced. This means that unless you´re in Denmark as a consequence of family reunification or as a refugee, free Danish classes are no longer an option.

You´ll now have to pay for your Danish classes and you therefore need to be aware that there are many options available to you outside of the public schools. We encourage you to look into these options  before selecting a school/course.

Public Danish courses offered by the municipality of Copenhagen.

There are currently 2 public language schools in Copenhagen which offer Danish lessons: Clavis and UC Plus.

Your right to attend these Danish classes starts when you get your CPR-number. The program is based on a complex voucher system, which ends within a pre-determined amount of time. If you are, for personal reasons, unable to complete the program within that time, you´ll lose your right to continue.

The fee you´ll have to pay for their courses is set by law.  It is currently 2000DKK per module. In addition, you must give a deposit of 1250DKK. The deposit is refundable.

Private Danish courses in Copenhagen.

You´ll find a variety of Danish courses offered by private schools in Copenhagen but the quality of these courses can be hard to tell based on a pamphlet or a home page.

Some of these private schools (e.g. IA Sprog, Studieskolen, and Københavns Sprogcenter) have previously worked in cooperation with the municipality of Copenhagen. Their teachers are experienced with teaching at all levels and can therefore help you reach a very high level of Danish, at which you should, for instance, be able to pass for instance a PD3 exam.

5 questions you should ask regarding your provider of Danish classes

We´ve listed here 5 questions that we recommend you  ask when choosing a Danish course/school.

1.What´s included in the fee?

Will you have to pay extra for books? Is an e-learning option included? Does the school develop its own inspiring learning material of a certain standard? And does the price also include access to a digital dictionary?

2. Will there be a test at the end of each level?

Does the school offer a test or an evaluation at the end of each course? Tests can be beneficial to the individual language learner´s process of learning the Danish language. Tests are furthermore essential since they ensure that all students in the following course are correctly placed at the right level. Language tests should be held according to the language skills/levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

3. How about the teachers?

Becoming a skilled Danish teacher takes time. It also requires a specialized educational background. Choose a school that hires qualified as well as experienced teachers who know all about helping and guiding you through the demanding process of learning Danish. It´s ok to ask questions regarding the teachers’ educational backgrounds.

4. What is the school´s reputation?

If you know any former or present students at the school in question, you might ask them about their experience?

5. Will you be offered a placement test or an information meeting before starting classes?

To ensure your full benefit of classes, ask if the school offers a placement test to determine which level is right for you before choosing a course or a level of classes. This isn´t common practice in all schools, but it´s an advantage for you.

IA Sprogs answers to the 5 questions.

Our answers to the 5 questions.

1.What´s included in the fee?

At IA Sprog you´ll receive books developed by our own  teachers and researchers. You´ll furthermore get access to our digital platform (mit.iasprog.dk), a digital dictionary, as well as our e-learning material which includes more than 100 videos and interactive exercises. Since our learning material has been developed by teachers and researchers here at IA Sprog, you´ll experience how well books, e-learning material, and classes correlate with and support each other.

2. Will there be a test at the end of each level?

At IA Sprog most courses end with a language test. A few of our courses do not finalize with a test, and you will be advised if that´s the case.

3. How about the teachers?

Our Danish teachers all have a Master´s degree in Danish as a Second Language. (FVU teachers are all professionally educated FVU teachers) Since focus on learning methods is essential to us at IA Sprog, all our teachers are furthermore trained in our Intensive- and Blended Learning methods.

4. What is the schools reputation?

You can find some of our students´ stories here.

5. Will you be offered a placement test or an information meeting before starting classes?

All new students at IA Sprog will be invited to either a placement test or an information meeting before signing up for classes. This is to help you be sure of starting your course at the level that is right for you, prevent you from wasting money on the wrong course, and ensure you get the most out of the course you register for.

Danish courses

FVU isn´t a free Danish course

FVU(Forberedende Voksen Undervisning/ Preparatory education for adults) is still free of charge but it´s not a traditional Danish course. It´s not for everyone, nor is it a beginner program. In other words, FVU isn´t a shortcut to free Danish classes but a program for adults who speak Danish but need to improve their reading and writing skills and thereby become better qualified for employment in the Danish labor market. (To qualify for FVU classes you need a minimum level of Danish similar to A1 in writing and A2+ in oral Danish skills.) When you sign up for FVU classes at IA Sprog we´ll help you determine if your level of Danish is sufficient and we´ll always start by inviting you to an FVU screening.

FVU

We, at IA Sprog, follow the guidelines below from the Danish Health Authority and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs- regarding the coronavirus.

On Tuesday, March 3rd, the Danish Health Authority has increased preparedness and made further recommendations regarding the coronavirus.

The Danish authorities now recommend that everyone who has arrived in Denmark after the 2nd of March 2020 from a country with widespread transmission of the coronavirus stay home from work and educational institutions for 14 days after arriving in Denmark.

Currently, these countries include China (excl. Hong Kong), South Korea (the province Gyeongbuk and the city Daegu), Iran and Italy (the regions Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Piemonte, Veneto).

All students and employees at IA Sprog must follow these recommendations.

Students affected by the new recommendations can receive guidance on teaching activities by contacting their teacher.

The reopening of IA Sprog has already started

On March 11th all educational institutions in Denmark were closed down.  Students and teachers at IA Sprog were sent home, and our classes were reorganized as online learning within a very short time.

In 2018 IA Sprog launched new and better concepts for online learning. These concepts have come in very handy during this unusual time. Thanks to the experience, creativity and flexibility of our teachers it was possible to reorganize our classes as online learning quite fast and with a good outcome.

This week IA Sprog has welcomed a small group of students to our physical classrooms again. And we are looking forward to welcoming even more students back to our school. We expect to increase the number of classes held in our physical classrooms gradually. In this process we will of course begin with the smallest groups in order to ensure that the reopening takes place in a safe and secure way in terms of health and prevention.

One of the small groups allowed to back to our physical classrooms in a near future is going to be our PD3 brush up class. This class is right for you, if you are taking the PD3 exam soon.

Teaching with a distance of course requires more space, and therefore we will open gradually and only as quickly as we are able to guarantee safe and optimal conditions for all our students and teachers.

We are offering lots of new courses now and will soon announce our popular Danish courses during the summer break, so go a head and have look at our course catalogue. We are looking forward to welcoming you, and you will of course be notified directly with information about when and how your class is being conducted be it online or in a physical classroom. You can also stay informed here on our website and on our facebook page.

See you soon!

We retain our employees with Danish lessons

The company Siteimprove has 33 nationalities gathered under one roof. HR Director Gitte Hemmingsen reveals what she does to attract and retain the right employees. They offer Danish lessons in close collaboration with IA Sprog

“We are seeing a need for Danish skills, even though our corporate language is English. Many of our employees have moved here permanently. Others are only here for prolonged periods of time. And we’d like to keep them here as long as we can,” HR Director for Europe, Gitte Hemmingsen, explains.

Siteimprove helps companies all over the world with responsible and safe operation of websites and other web applications. Among other things, the head office in Copenhagen operates a sales function serving customers throughout the world. That is one of the reasons why there is a need for so many different cultures and nationalities – not least on the sales team.

“If employees learn Danish, perhaps they will stay here a little longer. Maybe they feel a little more at home here. And it is also a fact that relevant services that provide value for the employees also strengthen the company,” Gitte Hemmingsen adds.

Surprisingly great interest

“First of all, we were surprised by the overwhelming interest in the Danish lessons since we extended the offer to the organization. We hoped to be able to assemble one group, but enough people were interested to make up three groups in all,” Gitte relates.

An advantage in the recruiting race

“It has also surprised us to see what the Danish lessons have meant for our employer brand. The good candidates are always sought after. But our recruitment consultants are now telling me that it generates a great deal of interest when the candidates hear that Siteimprove offers Danish lessons,” Gitte concludes.

Danish lessons at your company

Danish lessons at your company start with a screening of the employees, where IA Sprog assesses which participants can attend which lessons based on their level of Danish language skills. The classes are usually scheduled after regular working hours and take place in a meeting room at the company once a week.

We are happy to welcome our students and teachers back on Hejrevej Tuesday 2nd of June.  Finally we can return to our classrooms and fill our school with the sound of human voices, laughter and learning. We have missed that so!

When you arrive at IA Sprog on June 2nd, there are a few things we must kindly draw to your attention. We still need to protect our selves and each other against corona infection, as we will be getting a bit closer again.

IA Sprog will ensure that the reopening takes place in a safe and secure way in terms of health and prevention

We have followed the recommendations of the government throughout the whole corona-closure. And we will of course continue to do so during the reopening. This means the following for your safety:

  • Classrooms will be cleaned between each class.
  • There will be hand sanitizer/ rubbing alcohol available to students and employees.
  • Points of contact such as door handles and keyboards will be disinfected several times a day by our cleaning staff.
  • We will make it easy for you to keep one meter of distance to people around you by ensuring that tables are places correctly and with plenty of space between them in our classrooms.

In return we expect you to take good care of yourself and those around you

It is our job to do everything we can to ensure your safety. At the same time, you have an important responsibility too. We expect you to:

  • Wash your hands when you arrive at IA Sprog.
  • Cough in your sleeve – not in the classroom space.
  • Keep a distance to your teacher and co-students.
  • Use hand sanitizer/ rubbing alcohol, if you are unable to wash your hands.
  • Adhere to the distance markers on the floor.
  • Stay as much as possible in the classroom and as little as possible in the common areas.
  • Stay home, if you feel sick, or if you live with people, who have covid-19.

We reopen our classroom activities, but we do not open our café just yet, so it might be a good idea to bring food and drink from home. We do however have a dispenser with cold water in our canteen area.

Let’s help each other prevent infection, so we can ensure safe surroundings when our school finally opens again.

We are looking forward to seeing you!

New, strong partnership between IA Sprog and Studieskolen

IA Sprog and Studieskolen have agreed upon a partnership which involves Studieskolen taking over and continuing the operation of Danish courses and FVU at IA Sprog from 1 October 2020.

This agreement has been made in the light of changed market conditions in the City of Copenhagen since July 2018. With this new partnership, IA Sprog and Studieskolen will stand strong as a provider of Danish courses and FVU in Copenhagen.

Studieskolen will continue its current activities unchanged. IA Sprog will keep its teaching activities and facilities on Hejrevej in its own name, under the management of Studieskolen.

We are looking forward to continuing our strong tradition of offering high quality education, something that both parties have been known for for many years. It is our first priority that you as a student will not experience any changes.
